BIOGRAPHY

Josef Hoffmann

Josef Hoffmann, born on 15 December 1870 in Pirnitz, Czech Republic, was one of the co-founders of the association "Wiener Secession" (1887), whose projects were not limited to aesthetic or financial needs, and which are still devoted today independently and explicitly to contemporary artistic creation throughout the world. In 1903 Hoffmann, together with Koloman Moser and Fritz Wärndorfer, also participated in the foundation of the Wiener Werkstätten, following the model of the British craftsmen's associations. The aim was to give art and craftsmanship the same meaning. Mainly, he successfully ran his own architectural studio. He built numerous important buildings such as the Palais Stoclet in Brussels and numerous urban villas. His creativity also flowed into interior design, his most famous design, the "sitting machine," he designed in 1908.

Hoffmann's design is characterised by its geometric and cubic forms, as evidenced above all by the Kubus armchair, first presented in 1910 at the Buenos Aires International Exposition. Thanks to its tendency to use cubic shapes, it was given the nickname "Quadratl-Hoffmann".

Josef Hoffmann reached cubic perfection with the design of the famous Kubus armchair, a skilful blend of mathematical precision and the influence of Viennese constructivism. More than a piece of furniture, it is a work of art.

Geometric lines and cubist blocks became Hoffmann's insignia at the beginning of the 20th century. The Kubus collection shows his ability to create convincing furniture from clear lines and geometric shapes. His unique style distinguishes him from his contemporaries, a style that inspired both Art Deco pioneers and Modernists.
